Corporate Issues Relating To GenRe 1. Software Control The department responsible for installation of PC software such as Microsoft Access and Excel may also control the distribution and installation of GenRe Software. In terms of installation complexity, GenRe's setup procedure is simple: a. It creates a subfolder, GenReSoftware, in C:\Program Files directory. b. It does not change the PC's system registry nor connected to the internet. c. PC users should be able to install the software. 2. Technical Complexity and Support GenRe has two levels of code: (1) the generics for which GenRe support is responsible for fixing and enhancing, and (2) company or program-specific code that users build on top of generics. The generics may be likened to Excel program; the specifics, to Excel macros. For companies that plan to install GenRe on a number of desktops, it is recommended to have a power user capable of supporting other users. The database is a simple structure. You can always press the control-alt-delete keys in case of program or PC failure without or little corruption to the files. The code is peppered with tracer codes that help identify problems relatively quickly. 3. Data Access and Control Subsets of enterprise database that are exported to Excel may be exported to GenRe Software as well. 4. Database Structure, Protection and Confidentiality The current GenRe database is a collection of flat files. The software imports/exports to Excel and csv files. There are two levels of passwords - supervisor and user. The first has been disabled. Programs generate series of check digits to help trap out-of-program changes to files. Data corruption is easily fixed by users but for the same reason data security is rather weak. For critical and sensitive systems, the PC should be standalone, password protected and physically secured. On the hand, sensitive information generated by traditional systems are accessible to more people than necessary since technical staff is almost always a privy to it through either the front or back door. With GenRe, only the key user or manager controls the data and programs. Benefits of Using GenRe 1. When users carry out the mundane tasks (creating reports, building small departmental systems), the technical staff concentrates on mission-critical projects. 2. Substantial savings in software costs. 3. Sensitive technical data becomes more confidential.
